You can’t see a real Florida wetland from a classroom.
That’s pretty much the whole pitch.
Our captains take students out on airboats through the headwaters of the Everglades. The kids usually spot alligators, often turtles, sometimes bald eagles, and almost always a few wading birds. The captains narrate. Teachers tell us afterward that the airboat ride alone covers most of what they’re already teaching in their ecology unit.
Back on land, students rotate through the 70-foot gem and fossil mine where they keep what they find, the butterfly enclosure, the alligator viewing pond, and Mini Moo Land where they feed our Highland cows. Buses park on-site for free. Lunch is on-site. We’ve been doing this since 1994, so the logistics are figured out.
Lunch & catering Options
We do lunch at Boggy Bottom BBQ, our on-site restaurant. School groups can pick the buffet (two meats from burgers, chicken, hot dogs, pulled pork, or a black bean burger for vegetarians; two sides from coleslaw, green beans, corn, or baked beans; drinks included), or the boxed option, which is the same meats with chips and a drink. Boxed is faster if you’re tight on time.

Airboat Tours
The airboat ride is the BEST PART.
We take groups out into the wetlands south of the lake, where the Kissimmee River starts the slow flow down into the Everglades. On a typical run you’ll see alligators, wading birds, and turtles. River otters show up sometimes. Bald eagles do too, but not on schedule.
Our captains are USCG certified and they’ve been doing this for years. They adjust the narration to the grade level: third graders get more “look at that gator,” high schoolers get more about watershed function and invasive species. If your class is in the middle of a specific unit, note it in the booking form and the captain will lean that direction.
Mini Moo Land
Mini Moo Land opened in 2025. Miniature Highland cows from Scotland, scaled down to about the size of a large dog. The shaggy coat is the whole deal: students brush them, feed them, pet them, cuddle them, take photos. Staff supervise.
For the younger grades this is usually the highlight of the day. It’s also the slow-paced option after the airboat ride gets the kids’ adrenaline going.
Gem & Fossil Mining
We have a 70-foot mining trough with running water. Students get a bucket of dirt and gravel, sift it through a screen at the trough, and keep whatever they find. The buckets contain real gemstones (emeralds, rubies, amethyst), fossils (fossilized amber and shark teeth show up a lot), and a mix of other rocks. There’s an identification chart on the wall.
Teachers usually expect this to interest the younger students more. It doesn’t. Middle schoolers and high schoolers get pulled in too once they start finding things.
Butterfly Encounter
The butterfly garden is an enclosed walk-through habitat. We keep 17 species, mostly Florida natives. Depending on when you visit you’ll see eggs on host plants, caterpillars, chrysalises, and adults all at once. We can give the kids paper cups with nectar if you want the butterflies to land on them.
The same enclosure has turtles, frogs, wood ducks, and a couple of quail. Not the longest stop on a field trip, but a good one.
Gator Pond
The gator pond is a fenced enclosure with our smaller alligators (juveniles up to a few feet). Students can get close, safely, with a barrier between them and the gators. This is usually where we do the alligator talk. The kids get their questions answered before they’re staring at a 10-foot wild gator from a boat 5 minutes later.
That’s why most groups hit the gator pond before the airboat ride. It primes the kids to actually look for alligators on the water, instead of being too keyed up to focus
